CARROLL’S RETURN TO LIFT CORNWALL

The return of Richard Carroll, three times voted Trelawny’s Army player of the year, is the major change in the side to face Eastern Counties on Saturday at Camborne in the final match in this season’s County Shield, for the winners the prize of promotion to the County Championship (Bill Beaumont Cup) next season.

CORNWALL BROUGHT DOWN TO EARTH

Despite outscoring their hosts on the try front by four to three, Cornwall were beaten at Hertford on Saturday in their second County Shield match by 31-26. Meanwhile at Chinnor, Eastern Counties won their second match against Oxfordshire 18-14 and will travel to Camborne next Saturday knowing that a draw will be good enough for them to win the group,

Matt Jess comes into the starting XV for Cornwall’s second County Shield match at Hertford tomorrow afternoon at 3pm in place of the injured Lewis Vinnicombe. Redruth ace Paul Thirlby comes in at full back with Mount’s Bay’s Jamie Semmens switching to the other wing in place of Nathan Pedley.

CORNWALL BACK IN BUISNESS

Cornwall couldn’t have hoped for a better start in their quest to regain their place in the County Championship proper next season following an emphatic 66-8 win, scoring no less than eleven tries over Oxfordshire in their opening County Shield match at Redruth on Saturday in front of a sizeable crowd.

BIZARRE RESULTS HELP CONDEMN CAB’S

Uncanny…that’s the way it seems to me that not one of the results went Launceston’s way on Saturday. Fair enough that the CAB’s lost at Franklins Gardens against Northampton Saints 81-0, there was never any possibility that the CAB’s could pull off what Exeter Chiefs, Nottingham or the Cornish Pirates had failed to do all season and beat Northampton.

NEWQUAY HORNETS PROMOTED, AS CAB’S SWEAT IT OUT

Not really the result that Launceston were hoping for on Saturday losing at home to Bedford by 22-18, though the losing bonus point has given them an extra point over Sedgley Park in the relegation battle in National League 1. It’s all going to boil down to the Sedgley Park v Rotherham Titans result,

MOUNT’S BAY CROWN FINE SEASON

Where else can one start this week other than sending warmest congratulations to Mount’s Bay RFC on writing yet another fantastic chapter in their all too brief history. The champagne corks popped all over the Mennaye as the Bay celebrated a seventh promotion in eight seasons! With the National League 3 South safely secured Mount’s Bay can now plan for their next campaign in National League 2,

PIRATES & ALBION SHARE SPOILS

Honours even at the Recreation Ground Camborne on Sunday afternoon as the Cornish Pirates drew 17-17 with Plymouth Albion in front of a large crowd despite the bitterly cold conditions. Albion have had a hard time of late but you can always guarantee that coach Graham Dawe will always have something special lined up when he crosses the Tamar to head west.

CAB’S ALIVE & KICKING

Like a man sinking in quicksand whose hand is gripped at the last moment the Cornish All Blacks lived to fight another day with a thrilling 27-5 victory over the Newbury Blues at Polson on Saturday. The five-point haul lifted the Cornish side off the foot of the table five points away from Sedgley Park and safety.
