25 Years of TASC Celebrated at Rose-in-Vale

TRELAWNY’S ARMY HOLDS 25TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER

Members and guests of the Trelawny’s Army Supporters Club recently held their “Silver Jubilee” Dinner at the Rose-in-Vale Country Hotel in Mithian, St. Agnes. The evening proved to be a great success with entertainment provided post dinner by the Cadgwith Singers.

There was a special 25th Anniversary Cake baked and decorated by Shirley Floyd.

Hon. Sec Ian Gordon was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Prior to dinner Neil Plummer said the Cornish Grace and the loyal toast was proposed by special guest for the evening Roger Watson Hon.Sec of the Cornwall RFU, and a founder member of TASC.

John Rowe, who along with Marjorie, organised the splendid evening proposed the toast to Trelawny’s Army. This was followed by the singing of “Trelawny” by club Chairman Phil Trevarton.

Roger Watson spoke of the early days of the “Army”, which was founded in 1993 with him as the first Hon.Sec, following an idea by Dave Saunby of Falmouth, who was the time the base drummer with the Falmouth Marine Band.

As an organisation we had to struggle to get recognition from the Cornwall RFU, but slowly, with great patience, we managed to forge links and build a partnership that sees both working closely for the benefit of rugby union in Cornwall.

Roger also spoke of the early trips the Army made to support the Cornwall team, notably to the Netherlands in 1993 and then to Ireland the following year. These proved to be a great success and forged a bond with the players that continues to this day.

The support that members of TASC give to the Cornwall side at a game is a huge physiological boost to the players whether at home or on a long away trip up in England!

At the conclusion of Roger’s address, Ian presented both Roger and club President John Treglown with commemorative plaques to mark TASC’s 25 years.

Phil presented to bouquets of flowers to Nikki Watson and Julia Treglown. Bouquets were also presented to committee members Marina Trevarton and Viv Broadhurst.

The presentations concluded with John Treglown presenting the TASC Indoor Bowls Shields to Harry Head (Juniors), Marina Trevarton (Ladies) and Barry Perriman (Mens).

Neil Plummer then led the singing of “Hail to the Homeland”.

John Rowe then introduced the Cadgwith Singers as members and guest retired to the bar.

Skinners presentations

At our most recent committee meeting held at Skinner’s’ Brewery we completed two important presentations.

Firstly we presented a cheque to Betty Stogs for £100. This was for his current fund raising charity, Little Harbour Children’s Hospice SW. A cause that deserves all the support it can get.

We have been indebted to Fred Thomas (aka Betty) for his participation on our coach trips and we have benefited from his humour and generosity, so this donation to his chosen charity is in thanks to him.

Our second presentation was to Steve Skinner, Steve received a TASC rugby shirt with a personalized Skinner’s Logo on the back. Steve came to our rescue many years ago at Camborne RFC when he allowed us to set up our tradestand inside his beer tent in a deluge at a Cornwall game. Since then he has provided suitable liquid refreshment for our away trips on our coaches, so it is with our gratitude that we have presented him with one of our shirts.

Steve also receive a presentation bottle of gin from Ian Gordon in celebration of our Twickenham Trip 2017.

Message from Chairman Phil to the CRFU

Dear Roger,

I wish to convey my appreciation of this year’s County Championship to you and the players in this year’s Campaign.

The bitter taste of losing the final to a highly skilled and physical Lancashire must be so close to the player’s hearts that no words of mine can assuage their disappointment.

But, please be assured that the team that has taken us to Twickenham for the fifth consecutive time, defeating Surrey, Devon and Hertfordshire in such emphatic matches should never feel that they have in any way failed Trelawny’s Army and the assembled ranks of Cornish Rugby supporters. I hope in time that they should draw a sense of pride of what they have accomplished, namely reaching a Twickenham Final, a pinnacle that many rugby players will never accomplish.

The County Campaign games mounted by Cornwall are still the best supported matches that many of your players we see in their playing careers and are a testimony to the efforts made by CRFU Officers and the Players alike.

Trelawny’s Army are immensely proud of “Our Players”, who have worn the “Black & Gold” over the last four weeks and the only disappointment we will have is that we have to wait another year to wear our Black & Gold and fly the flags once again.

Please relay my heart felt appreciation to the Players and Officials alike and I wish you all the best until we can do this once again in 2018.

Phil Trevarton

Chairman
Trelawny’s Army Supporters Club

Twickenham security measures enhanced

The information below will also apply to the England V Barbarians game and County Finals on Sunday 28th May.

People travelling up to Twickenham on Saturday for the rugby clash between Exeter Chiefs and the Wasps are being advised there will be extra security in place at the stadium.

Security is being increased across the country as a result of the Manchester attack.

The Chiefs said on their website that police had implemented extra measures for Saturday’s Premiership Final, with kick-off due at 14:30. People have also been advised “not to bring bags”.

The Rugby Football Union said: “We have been operating enhanced security measures for some time and will continue to do so for both match days this weekend. We work closely with the police for all our events at the stadium.”
